Bikes

Bikes were one of the first wheel based inventions to be easily obtained and used by the masses. Prior to the bicycle, carts, carriages and wagons were the only other mode of transport and to travel at any speed a horse was necessary which is prohibitively expensive. The true inventor has been lost, but there have been similar devices built since the late 1700s.

Bikes typically have two wheels that are in line with each other and the frame. The front wheel is used to steer and has handlebars attached. The rear wheel is connected to pedals with a chain. The bicyclist pushes the pedals around to provide forward momentum and there are typically handbrakes mounted on the handlebars.

Bikes can be used for many purposes from transportation to entertainment. They are easy to learn how to ride and there are many configurations and sizes for any type of terrain from roads to mountain trails. Prices range from less than fifty dollars to over five thousand for ultra light top of the line models.
